Albert Einsten's Brain Teaser

I spent a good 3 hours last night doing this logic puzzle. According to Einstein, only 2% of the world's population could solve. I don't think that's true, 'cause given enough time and patience, everybody should be able to find the answer. The answer to after the jump. Enjoy!

P.S. I made a complicated--yet colorful--spread sheet for this problem. But that's not necessary.

There are 5 houses each with a different color. Their owners, each with a unique heritage, drinks a certain type of beverage, smokes a certain brand of cigarette, and keeps a certain variety of pet. None of the owners have the same variety of pet, smoke the same brand of cigarette or drink the same beverage.

Clues:
  • The Brit lives in the red house.
  • The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
  • The Dane drinks tea.
  • Looking from in front, the green house is just to the left of the white house.
  • The green house's owner drinks coffee.
  • The person who smokes Pall Malls raises birds.
  • The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
  • The man living in the center house drinks milk.
  • The Norwegian lives in the leftmost house.
  • The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
  • The man who keeps a horse lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
  • The owner who smokes Bluemasters also drinks beer.
  • The German smokes Prince.
  • The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
  • The man who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water.

Reblogged: The Egg

I enjoy this little dialog. It's a nice, well-thought out interpretation of religion and the meaning of life. I bolded all the lines that I found most meaningful and enlightening in this essay and I wish to share this story with everyone.
You were on your way home when you died.
It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me.
And that’s when you met me.
“What… what happened?” You asked. “Where am I?”
“You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words.
“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…”
“Yup,” I said.
“I… I died?”
“Yup. But don’t feel bad about it. Everyone dies,” I said.
You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” You asked. “Is this the afterlife?”
“More or less,” I said.
“Are you god?” You asked.
“Yup,” I replied. “I’m God.”
“My kids… my wife,” you said.
“What about them?”
“Will they be all right?”
“That’s what I like to see,” I said. “You just died and your main concern is for your family. That’s good stuff right there.”
You looked at me with fascination. To you, I didn’t look like God. I just looked like some man. Or possibly a woman. Some vague authority figure, maybe. More of a grammar school teacher than the almighty.
“Don’t worry,” I said. “They’ll be fine. Your kids will remember you as perfect in every way. They didn’t have time to grow contempt for you. Your wife will cry on the outside, but will be secretly relieved. To be fair, your marriage was falling apart. If it’s any consolation, she’ll feel very guilty for feeling relieved.”
“Oh,” you said. “So what happens now? Do I go to heaven or hell or something?”
“Neither,” I said. “You’ll be reincarnated.”
“Ah,” you said. “So the Hindus were right,”
All religions are right in their own way,” I said. “Walk with me.”
You followed along as we strode through the void. “Where are we going?”
“Nowhere in particular,” I said. “It’s just nice to walk while we talk.”
“So what’s the point, then?” You asked. “When I get reborn, I’ll just be a blank slate, right? A baby. So all my experiences and everything I did in this life won’t matter.”
“Not so!” I said. “You have within you all the knowledge and experiences of all your past lives. You just don’t remember them right now.”
I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Your soul is more magnificent, beautiful, and gigantic than you can possibly imagine. A human mind can only contain a tiny fraction of what you are. It’s like sticking your finger in a glass of water to see if it’s hot or cold. You put a tiny part of yourself into the vessel, and when you bring it back out, you’ve gained all the experiences it had.
“You’ve been in a human for the last 48 years, so you haven’t stretched out yet and felt the rest of your immense consciousness. If we hung out here for long enough, you’d start remembering everything. But there’s no point to doing that between each life.”
“How many times have I been reincarnated, then?”
“Oh lots. Lots and lots. An in to lots of different lives.” I said. “This time around, you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.”

It's The Game of LIFE

I recently played a Game of LIFE with a couple of friends of mine. It was my second time ever playing the game with half a decade in between the two times. I was more than a little slow. I didn't win with the most amount of money and assets that night but I wanted to recount my "life" to everybody for the heck of it.

My Life's Accomplishments (aka LIFE tiles):
  • Saved an endangered species
  • Won a Pulitzer Prize
  • Found a cure for the common cold
  • Built a better mousetrap
  • Build a new computer

My Home:

Victorian home (worth $200,000)-library, parlor, servant's quarters, marble fireplace, wraparound porch

Family: One son

I ended the game with no loans and stock to my name. I had more than half a million dollars to my name. But what was my occupation? It must have been a lucrative job. I can promise you that I had a very high salary.

Find out after the jump.

What I'm Watching: Epic Rap Battles of History!

Most of you may already know about this, but I've just discovered this and I want to share the joy with everybody else who hasn't. It's a Youtube series started by nicepeter (the same guy who co-wrote "Like It's Quidditch"). It revolves around the idea of pitting two famous figures (real or fictional) against one another in an epic rap battles. The result? Pure Awesomesauce.

Just watch and enjoy.

Reblogged: Would You Convert for Love?

I recently read a letter sent to an advice columnist that really bothered me. One of the college blogs that I follow, CollegeCandy, has a popular columnist named Tuffy Luv (not her real name, of course). It's exactly how it sounds, Aunt Tuffy Luv will give you some tough love and say it how it is. The advice that she gives is funny and sometimes much needed.

But the most recent letter deals with a problem that I have encountered once before (a long time ago). And I'm sure it's a frequent and important problem that has been dealt with by many people.

Here's a gist of what that letter said,

Dear Tuffy Luv,

I’ve been dating my boyfriend for almost all of college (we’re seniors) and he’s my perfect guy. I never believed in soul mates until I met him. We get along great, we have so much in common, we have almost all the same friends, and it’s just a great situation.

Perfect, right? Well, I thought so.

We’ve been making plans to move in together, and he seemed totally fine with that, but a couple of week ago I mentioned in passing something about getting married (I know, I know) and he threw a major curveball at me. It turns out that he won’t marry me–unless I convert to Catholicism.

I never knew this was a big deal for him. He doesn’t seem to be very religious (I’ve never seen him go to church except Christmas and Easter) and he’s never brought this up before. But when we talked about it a couple of weeks ago he was really clear that I would need to convert or else it wasn’t going to work....

You can read the rest of the letter here.

Basically, this girl found out that the boyfriend that she's planning on moving in with doesn't want to marry her unless she converts to his religion. But the problems lies in the fact that she's not religious at all and she doesn't want to pretend to be religious when she's not.

I can relate to this because I have never been the religious type either. My parents didn't have time to teach me their religious faiths (nor did they really think about it much).  I like the freedom of not being held down by a certain set of beliefs. I like not have a label. I must admit that I sometimes feel left out or awkward when I'm at a friend's house for dinner or a holiday party. But I'm okay with that. No, really, I'm okay with not being religious.

I had a conversation with an ex of mine last year about something very similar to this. Simpally he didn't care what religion his kids believed in, they just had to believe in something. This is all fine and dandy, but the conversation soon turned sour as my ex tried to imply that people who converted to a different religion aren't really of that religion.

Let me give you an example. He says a person can't grow up without religion (or as a Christian) and convert to Judaism. Because that person is not truly Jewish. Just how kids have to practice Judaism all their lives in order to be Jewish. (My ex was Jewish.)

*Warning: This wasn't the whole conversation but it's what I took away from it and remembered.*

Happy Valentine's Day

I'm very excited about today because this is the first year that I get to celebrate Valentine's Day despite being in relationships for the past five years. It was so much that I didn't have a valentine to be with, more like there was something that always came up.

To me, this day isn't about boasting your relationship status (because that's obnoxious), but rather a day where you can tell/show the important people in your life that you love them. It's the same idea as Father's Day. It doesn't matter whether or not your biological father in your life; that day is still a day where you can thank the person who fill that role. (Or at least, that's how I celebrate Father's Day.)

Apart from all the chocolate that I'll never be able to eat (I'll explain why another time), I also love the quintessential Valentine's Day candy: Sweethearts.

Like the candy corn of the lover's holiday, you either hate Necco's Sweethearts or you love them. I, for one, love these little adorable heart-shaped candy. I love reading the messages that are printed on them and picking out my favorite colors.

My co-workers and I celebrated with a whole jar of these this morning and we also got around to talking about Sweethearts rich history. Many of you may not know that Sweethearts have been around for more than a century. I know, crazy, right??

You can read more about the history of Sweethearts here. It's especially interesting to read about how the messages on these candies have changed by the decade ('cause you're not going to get a Sweetheart that reads "Tweet Me" in the 1930's, that's for sure).

To end this post, I just want to remind everyone that I love y'all. If you haven't found love now like I have, you will soon. Because everyone deserves somebody to love, everyone. =)

Happy New Year's!

Wanted to wish you all a happy new year. =D

Life is Beautiful

Life is like an impressionist work of art. You'll always find flaws if you look closely enough, but if you look at the big picture, you'll realize that life is very beautiful.

A Good Night's Sleep

I'm going back to school tonight which means that for the first time in 5 weeks, I'll be able to party as much as I want and sleep in whenever I want with no work to worry about the next day. Yay for college life!

So in spirit of getting the good night's sleep that we all deserve, here are some fun facts about sleep:

Can't Sleep!

I had half the day off today. That may not sound like much but if you knew how much I work, any chance when I'm not working is a miracle. So anyway, I went shopping today and bought a bunch of stuff for a bunch of money. My mom is always going on and on about how I should start saving up. Which I know I should, but sometimes I wish I can just play her this song.

Now I know that I did a post about electronic dance music a couple of days back. But still, I'm totally in this kind of mood right now. Plus, I'm not tech-savvy at all so I'm just messing around with what I can and can not do with this blog.

So enjoy!

What I'm Listening to: Electronic Dance Music

It's pretty late right now, but I'm totally in a techno mood. Currently, I am enjoying Crystal Castles and Tiesto.

My boyfriend absolutely adores Crystal Castles which is a electronic duo hailing from Toronto, Canada. I've heard many of their songs off of their new album but I only to seem to like the Optimus Prime version of "Baptism".

It is currently my ringtone for my boyfriend.

Now Tiesto, on the other hand, is a Dutch musician and DJ who have performed live around the world. I feel that his songs produced in collaborations with well-known artists turn out to be the best. So here are a few of my personal favorites.

And of course, there's "Stereo Love" which has been playing on the radio as if it were a Katy Perry song. It's by a Romanian musician named Edward Maya featuring the voice of Vika Jigulina. (Don't worry, I don't know who they are either.)

Hope y'all enjoy!

Check These Bloggers Out!

It's official! Blogs have become all the rage within my group friends. Everyone either has one or is thinking of getting one.

So here's a preview into two new blogs that my friends have started.

This Simple Thing was started up by my friend Caitlin. She's a little more organized than I. She has a specific category that she posts about for each day of the week. That's pretty impressive in my book. Caitlin is very creative (going to film school and all) and she regularly posts her original work on there. And I must say, they're all quite good!

Blue-Eyed Curiosity is a new blog that was started by my friend Beth who needed an outlet from her very boring winter class. She's pretty outspoken but her intentions are sincere. She's starting out just like me so her direction is unclear as of right now. But still, her spoiler review of The Green Hornet was very interesting (and amusing)!

And as you can probably tell from the screenshots, the results from Saturday's game made Beth very upset. Best of luck next year, Beth. I hope you feel better!!

Trying to Live a Fabulous Life

I am a firm advocate of living through clothes. My personality shines through my style. I rarely dress up as often as I would like to. But when I do, I like to express my dream and aspirations through what I wear. This is probably why I enjoy shopping so much. The clothes that I buy and the looks that I create help me picture the life that I want to live.

I have recently been invited to go to a concert at the Kennedy Center performed by the National Symphony Orchestra. My friend Fogel and I have decided that we were going to have a "Fogel and Emma Fancy Day" which requires him to be in a three-piece suit and me in a dress. Thus, an excuse to go shopping!

Here's what I bought.

The lighting is pretty bad but my brother was soo bad at taking pictures that I just took the best ones out of the batch. But anyways, this is actually a nice, flow-y violet dress.
It has a Grecian feel to the design which is the reason why I love it so much. A perfect dress for a "mature culture enthusiast"!

On top of that, I bought a pair of the most beautiful pair of heels that I have ever gotten a chance to wear. It's a violet suede which is my favorite kind of fabric when it comes to shoes. And it's only $50 at full price!

And lastly, I have found the perfect one-shoulder dress. I have been told that I look exceptionally well in red. And I think this dress is the proof. The belt around my waist gives the look a whole other dimension while also distracting viewers from my pudge. (Don't lie, we all have one.)
These various outfits make me feel adventurous and daring, but most importantly of all, they make me feel beautiful inside and out. So I hope that you guys all have that sense of adventure when wearing clothes and let your life be reflected in your style.
